IB Digital Art Syllabus 2018-2019

IB Digital Art 2018-2019
LAB FEE: $40 is required for design supplies and materials
*Lab fee includes Adobe Creative Cloud year subscription

Welcome to IB Digital Art Design, my name is Dan Cornell and this is a very rigorous and exciting course.  I am super passionate about art, design, the 3D industry and its integration with technology. I have a wide range of experiences including over 16 years as a design & technology instructor, and 8 years of industry experience.  This course is very exciting, not only for the students, but also for me to teach. It is an intensive, two year course that guides students to develop aesthetic, conceptual, technical and cultural knowledge of both digital media and visual arts. It is structured to encourage individual exploration of a variety of media, art styles, movements, cultures and societies. The culminating event for the senior student is the IB Visual Arts Examination. This exam is given by an independent, trained IB examiner and is an art exhibition of the studio work and research created over the two year period.  This course is project based and requires supplies fee of $40.00 which covers your a sketchbook and a small portion of materials that students will consume over the course. All materials should be checked out using the “Materials Checkout” notebook.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

Exhibition Projects: Students are required to complete a well documented finished studio product each quarter for a total of 6-8 works during the course of the year. These projects will be graded on completion, its documentation (planning and process) and and overall presentation.  *Worth 40% of the grade

*Students will be required to keep an ongoing portfolio of digital images as an archive as well as for documentation for your Candidate Record Booklet and IB Examination. These photos (ideally) will be taken as products are completed.

*IB Exhibition Assessment: Students submit for assessment a selection of resolved artworks from their exhibition. The selected pieces should show evidence of their technical accomplishment during the visual arts course and an understanding of the use of materials, ideas and practices appropriate to visual communication. Students submit 8–11 pieces with exhibition text for each, along with a curatorial rationale (700 words maximum).

Process Portfolio: Students are expected to fully document their projects, tests, failures, and research in their digital journal daily. I will check students journal entries at the end of each month.   Additionally, students will turn-in a minimum of one formal finished screen a month. *Worth 40% of the grade

*IB Process Portfolio Assessment: Students submit carefully selected materials, which evidence their experimentation, exploration, manipulation and refinement of a variety of visual arts activities during the two-year course. Students submit 18–25 screens. The submitted work should be in at least three different art-making forms.

Comparative Study: Juniors are required to complete a minimum of three screens comparing artists of their choice by the end of the school year. Seniors are required to have a finished draft by the end of the first quarter.  *Worth 20% of the grade

*IB Comparative Study Assessment:Students analyze and compare different artworks by different artists. This independent critical and contextual investigation explores artworks, objects and artifacts from differing cultural contexts. Students compare at least 3 different artworks, by at least 2 different artists, with commentary over 10–15 screens. Students also submit a reflection on the extent to which their work and practices have been influenced by any of the art/artists examined (3–5 screens).

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is essential; classroom content is sequential and classes missed will affect student’s performance. Attendance is taken at the beginning of class; students need to be in their seat at the bell.

ABSENCES / TARDIES: Students will not be allowed admittance into class without a re-admit slip that indicates if the absence is excused or unexcused.  ALL classwork can be made up excluding student’s daily journal (this grade is buffered by two absences per month).  Refer to the Parent/Student Handbook for questions related general school rules and policies as it will be followed in my class.

BE HONEST: Cheating on assignments will not be tolerated; the project will result in a zero, and parents will be contacted. Asking and allowing another person to copy an assignment is cheating and both people are at fault. Again, see the Parent/Student Handbook for further information.

EXTRA HELP: Any time a student is in need of help, she/he can come see me during first lunch Monday-Friday.  Please try to make an appointment to insure I am present. We also have open design studio every Tuesday from 2:30pm to 4pm.
